Commercial Standards Statement · WBN News Corp Inc.™
"Commercial relationships make independent journalism financially possible. They do not make it commercially convenient."
WBN News Corp operates commercial relationships — advertising, sponsorships, brand partnerships, and affiliate arrangements — because they support the resources required to produce world-class journalism and intelligence. They do not determine what that journalism covers, how it is framed, or what conclusions it reaches. This Policy explains the standards that govern every commercial relationship at WBN and the protections that keep those relationships from compromising the independence our audiences depend on.
1
Editorial Independence — The Foundation

The credibility of WBN News Corp rests entirely on the independence of its editorial operation. That independence is not negotiable, not adjustable based on commercial circumstance, and not something WBN is willing to compromise in exchange for revenue. It is the reason our journalism has value — to our audiences, to our sources, and ultimately to the advertisers and partners who choose to associate with us.

WBN's editorial decisions — what to cover, how to cover it, what sources to use, what conclusions to reach, and what to publish — are made by editors and journalists on the basis of newsworthiness, public interest, accuracy, and ethical soundness. Advertising relationships, sponsorship arrangements, commercial partnerships, and affiliate agreements play no role in those decisions. This is not an aspiration. It is a structural reality enforced through the policies described in this document.

The commercial proposition of WBN is straightforward: Advertisers and sponsors associate with a media organisation whose editorial credibility makes that association valuable. The moment editorial credibility is compromised to serve commercial interests, the commercial value of the association diminishes with it. Editorial independence is not in tension with commercial success at WBN — it is the foundation of it.
2
The Separation Principle

WBN maintains a clear and enforced separation between its editorial operations and its commercial operations. This separation is not merely a matter of policy — it is reflected in WBN's organisational structure, its workflows, and the training and accountability of its people.

What the Separation Means in Practice
  • Editorial staff do not report to commercial leadership on matters of content, coverage, or editorial judgment. The editorial chain of command is independent of the commercial chain of command.
  • Commercial staff do not have advance access to editorial content before publication for the purpose of informing advertiser placement decisions or seeking editorial changes on behalf of commercial relationships.
  • Advertisers do not receive advance notice of editorial coverage concerning them or their competitors, and do not receive the opportunity to influence coverage as a condition or consequence of their commercial relationship with WBN.
  • Commercial relationships do not confer editorial protection. An organisation that advertises with WBN is subject to the same editorial scrutiny as any other. The presence or absence of a commercial relationship has no bearing on how WBN covers an organisation editorially.
  • Editorial staff do not participate in commercial negotiations with advertisers or sponsors, except where their involvement is limited to the specific scope of a sponsored content arrangement and is conducted under the oversight of the policies described here.
When Separation Is Tested

The separation between editorial and commercial will periodically be tested — by advertisers who believe that a commercial relationship entitles them to editorial consideration, by commercial pressures that create incentives to accommodate those expectations, and by situations where the interests of editorial and commercial happen to align in ways that could be misread. WBN's approach in all such situations is the same: editorial decisions are made on editorial grounds, commercial relationships are managed on commercial grounds, and no individual or circumstance is permitted to conflate the two.

3
Advertising Acceptance Standards

WBN reviews all advertising before publication on its platforms. Acceptance of advertising is not automatic — every advertiser and advertisement is assessed against the standards described in this section. WBN reserves the right to decline any advertising that does not meet these standards, regardless of the commercial value of the relationship involved.

General Acceptance Criteria
  • Accuracy. All advertising published on WBN platforms must be factually accurate. We do not publish advertisements that contain false or misleading claims about products, services, prices, availability, or the nature of the advertiser's business.
  • Clarity. Advertising must clearly identify the advertiser. Anonymous or identity-obscured advertising is not accepted.
  • Legal compliance. Advertising must comply with the laws of the jurisdictions in which it is served, including laws governing consumer protection, financial services, healthcare, data privacy, and advertising standards.
  • Decency. Advertising must meet basic standards of decency. We do not accept advertising that is offensive, exploitative, or demeaning to any individual or group.
  • Relevance. Advertising should be appropriate to WBN's professional audience and editorial environment. We reserve the right to decline advertising that is inconsistent with the character of our platforms even if it meets all other criteria.
4
Advertising We Decline

WBN will not accept advertising in the following categories, regardless of the commercial value involved. This list reflects both ethical commitments and the standards appropriate to a professional global media organisation. It is reviewed and updated periodically.

  • Advertising that contains false, misleading, or deceptive claims about a product, service, organisation, or individual
  • Advertising that promotes illegal products, services, or activities in any jurisdiction where WBN operates
  • Advertising that targets vulnerable populations — including children, individuals experiencing financial hardship, or those with gambling dependencies — in an exploitative manner
  • Advertising for unlicensed financial products, investment schemes, or services that constitute fraud or misrepresentation
  • Advertising that promotes hatred, discrimination, or violence against any individual or group on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other characteristic
  • Advertising designed to deceive readers about the nature of the content they are viewing — including advertising that deliberately imitates the style or presentation of WBN editorial content without appropriate labelling
  • Advertising for products or services that WBN's editorial teams are actively investigating or covering in a context where publication would create a material conflict
  • Advertising from organisations subject to active international sanctions in jurisdictions where WBN operates
  • Advertising that contains content prohibited by WBN's platform terms — including malware, spyware, or deceptive tracking technologies
Borderline cases are reviewed by WBN's commercial and editorial leadership jointly. Where a commercial decision has the potential to affect editorial integrity or reader trust, the editorial leadership position is determinative.
5
Sponsored Content — Definition & Standards

Sponsored content is content that is produced — in whole or in part — with the financial support of a commercial sponsor, and that is designed to serve the sponsor's communication interests while appearing within WBN's editorial environment. It is a legitimate commercial format when it is honestly and clearly disclosed. It is a serious breach of reader trust when it is not.

The Definition We Apply

Any content for which a commercial payment, consideration, or benefit has been received — or for which a commercial relationship with the sponsor exists — is classified as sponsored content at WBN. The relevant question is not whether the content looks like advertising but whether its production was commercially enabled. If it was, it is sponsored content and is disclosed as such.

Content Standards for Sponsored Material
  • Accuracy. Sponsored content published on WBN platforms must be factually accurate. We do not publish sponsored content containing false or misleading claims, regardless of the sponsor's instructions.
  • Decency. Sponsored content must meet the same content standards as WBN's editorial output — it must not be offensive, exploitative, or contrary to the values expressed in our Ethics Charter.
  • No editorial imitation. Sponsored content must not be designed or formatted to be mistaken for independent WBN editorial journalism. The visual and editorial language of WBN's independent journalism is not available for sponsored content to adopt.
  • Sponsor approval does not mean editorial endorsement. WBN's acceptance of a sponsored content arrangement does not constitute WBN's editorial endorsement of the sponsor, their products, services, or positions. This distinction is reflected in the labelling of all sponsored content.
Editorial Review of Sponsored Content

All sponsored content published on WBN platforms is reviewed by WBN's commercial team against the standards described in this section before publication. Where sponsored content raises concerns about accuracy, misleading claims, or content that conflicts with WBN's values, those concerns are resolved before publication — including, where necessary, by declining to publish the content. The sponsor does not have final authority over the publication of sponsored content on WBN platforms. WBN does.

6
Labelling Standards

Clear, consistent labelling of commercial content is one of the most important things WBN does to protect reader trust. Readers have a right to know when they are reading content that was commercially enabled — and WBN makes that clear without ambiguity, without small print, and without labels designed to disclose in form while obscuring in practice.

The Reader Test

WBN applies a simple test to every piece of commercial content: could a typical reader, encountering this content in its published context, reasonably mistake it for independent WBN editorial journalism? If the answer is yes, the labelling is insufficient. We apply this test at every stage of commercial content production and do not publish content that fails it.

Labelling Requirements
  • Prominence. Commercial content labels are displayed prominently — at the point of first encounter with the content, in a size and position that cannot reasonably be missed.
  • Clarity. Labels use clear, plain language. Accepted labels include "Sponsored by [Name]," "Paid Partnership with [Name]," "Advertiser Content," and "Presented by [Name]." Vague labels such as "Brought to you by" without a clear indication of commercial nature are not used alone.
  • Consistency. Labelling standards are applied consistently across all WBN platforms and formats. The same standard applies whether the content appears on a desktop website, a mobile application, a newsletter, a podcast, or a video format.
  • Affiliate disclosure. Where content contains affiliate links — links for which WBN may receive a commission if a reader makes a purchase — this is disclosed clearly in the relevant content. See Section 9 for full details.
  • AI-generated sponsored content. Where sponsored content has been generated or substantially produced with AI assistance, this is disclosed in addition to the standard sponsorship label. See Section 14 for full details.
7
Sponsored Content Formats

WBN operates across multiple content formats. Sponsored content may appear in any of these formats, subject to the standards and labelling requirements described in this Policy. The format does not change the obligation — disclosure is required in every case.

📄
Sponsored Articles
Written editorial-style content produced with sponsor support. Clearly labelled at the top of the article. The sponsor's name and the nature of the commercial relationship are disclosed prominently before the reader encounters the body of the content.
🎬
Sponsored Video
Video content produced with sponsor support. Sponsorship is disclosed verbally and visually at the opening of the video and in any accompanying description or metadata. Sponsored video does not imply WBN editorial endorsement of the sponsor's views or products.
📧
Sponsored Newsletters
Sponsorship of WBN newsletter editions or sections within newsletters is clearly disclosed in the subject line or preview text where practicable and in a prominent header within the newsletter content. Sponsors of newsletters do not influence the editorial content of those newsletters.
🎙️
Sponsored Podcasts
Podcast sponsorships are disclosed verbally by the host at the opening of the episode and at the point of any sponsor messaging within the episode. Sponsors do not determine podcast topics, guest selection, or editorial framing. Host endorsements are clearly identified as such.
📊
Sponsored Intelligence
Where WBN's intelligence products — including SignalCast™ dashboards, reports, or briefings — incorporate sponsored content or commercial distribution arrangements, this is disclosed clearly within the product. Sponsored intelligence content does not represent WBN's independent editorial or analytical position.
📱
Sponsored Events & Digital
WBN may produce sponsored digital events, webinars, and interactive content. Sponsorship is disclosed at registration, in event materials, and within the event itself. Sponsored events may feature sponsor representatives but are produced to WBN's editorial and quality standards.
8
Brand Partnerships & Commercial Collaborations

WBN enters into brand partnerships and commercial collaborations that extend beyond individual advertising placements — including multi-platform content programmes, co-branded initiatives, intelligence product partnerships, and editorial sponsorships of specific coverage areas. These relationships are subject to all the standards in this Policy and to additional requirements described in this section.

Partnership Standards
  • Partner selection. WBN selects brand partners whose values, conduct, and reputation are consistent with WBN's own standards. We do not enter into partnerships with organisations whose activities are incompatible with our Ethics Charter or our commitment to responsible journalism.
  • Editorial ring-fencing. All brand partnerships are structured so that the partner's commercial interests are clearly separated from WBN's independent editorial coverage of that partner and its sector. A brand partnership does not confer editorial protection, preferential coverage, or advance notice of WBN's editorial decisions.
  • Disclosure of significant partnerships. Where WBN has a significant commercial partnership with an organisation that is also the subject of WBN's editorial coverage, that relationship is disclosed when it is editorially relevant. WBN's editorial teams covering the relevant sector are informed of significant commercial relationships so that they can manage any actual or perceived conflict appropriately.
  • No exclusive commercial agreements affecting coverage. WBN does not enter into commercial arrangements that require or imply any restriction, exclusivity, or obligation affecting the content of WBN's independent journalism.
9
Affiliate Links & Referral Relationships

WBN may use affiliate links — links within content for which WBN receives a commission or other financial consideration when a reader takes a specific action, such as making a purchase or signing up for a service. The existence of an affiliate relationship does not alter WBN's editorial independence, but it is always disclosed to readers so they can factor it into their own assessment of the content.

Affiliate Disclosure Standards
  • Content containing affiliate links carries a clear disclosure notice that explains the nature of the commercial relationship — that WBN may receive compensation if the reader takes the linked action.
  • The disclosure appears prominently within the relevant content — not only in a general policy document that readers are unlikely to encounter.
  • Individual affiliate links are identified within the content where practicable, so readers know which specific links carry a commercial arrangement.
Independence in Affiliate Content

The inclusion of an affiliate link does not mean WBN endorses or recommends the product or service to which it links beyond the specific editorial context in which it appears. Where WBN editorial content includes genuine recommendations — product reviews, buying guides, service comparisons — those recommendations are made on the basis of editorial judgment, not affiliate commercial arrangements. If a product that would otherwise warrant inclusion does not have an affiliate arrangement, it is included on its editorial merits regardless.

WBN does not accept affiliate arrangements that require exclusive promotion, suppress competitor mentions, or oblige WBN to present products or services in a specific positive light regardless of their actual qualities.

10
Product Reviews & Independence

Where WBN publishes product reviews, service evaluations, or comparative assessments, readers rely on the independence of those assessments to make informed decisions. WBN protects that independence through the following standards.

  • Review independence. Products and services reviewed by WBN are assessed on their merits. Commercial relationships — including advertising arrangements, affiliate links, or sponsorships — do not influence the conclusions reached in WBN's editorial reviews.
  • Review samples. Where a product is provided to WBN for review purposes at no charge, this is disclosed clearly within the review. The provision of a review sample does not entitle the provider to editorial approval, advance review of the published assessment, or the right to request changes to editorial conclusions.
  • Paid reviews are prohibited. WBN does not accept payment for editorial product reviews. A review for which a commercial payment has been received is a commercial placement and is governed by WBN's sponsored content standards — not its editorial review standards.
  • Negative reviews are published. If an honest evaluation of a product or service leads to a critical or negative conclusion, that conclusion is published. WBN does not suppress critical reviews because the product's manufacturer or provider is a commercial partner.
11
Gifts, Incentives & Compensation

WBN's editorial and commercial staff do not accept gifts, payments, or benefits from advertisers, sponsors, commercial partners, or sources that could create an actual obligation or a perceived one. The independence of WBN's journalism depends on the confidence of our audiences that no individual at WBN is personally incentivised to produce favourable coverage or commercial outcomes for any external party.

What Is and Is Not Acceptable
✓ Generally Acceptable
  • Products provided for the specific purpose of editorial review, disclosed as described in Section 10
  • Modest hospitality at standard professional events — conferences, press briefings, industry gatherings — where the cost is proportionate and the context is clearly professional
  • Travel expenses for press trips where coverage of the destination or event is the explicit purpose, and where the commercial arrangement is disclosed in the resulting coverage
✕ Not Acceptable
  • Gifts of significant financial value from advertisers, sponsors, commercial partners, or sources
  • Personal payments, gratuities, or financial incentives from any external party in connection with editorial work
  • Hospitality that is disproportionate in value and that creates or could reasonably be seen to create an obligation
  • Personal benefits offered with an explicit or implicit expectation of favourable editorial or commercial treatment

Where the acceptability of a gift, hospitality, or benefit is unclear, the relevant staff member consults their line manager or the editorial leadership before accepting. When in doubt, decline.

12
Conflicts of Interest

A conflict of interest arises wherever a personal, financial, or institutional relationship has the potential — actual or perceived — to compromise the independence of WBN's editorial or commercial decisions. WBN identifies conflicts proactively, manages them structurally, and discloses them where they are editorially relevant.

  • Personal financial interests. WBN staff involved in editorial or commercial decisions do not hold personal financial interests in organisations that are the subject of those decisions without disclosure and, where necessary, recusal from the relevant decision.
  • Family and personal relationships. Staff do not make editorial or commercial decisions about organisations or individuals with whom they have significant personal relationships without disclosure and appropriate management of that conflict.
  • Significant commercial relationships disclosed editorially. Where WBN has a significant ongoing commercial relationship with an organisation that is the subject of editorial coverage, this is disclosed to readers when it is editorially relevant. The presence of a commercial relationship does not prevent editorial coverage — but readers who might consider it relevant are informed.
  • Institutional conflicts. WBN's editorial and commercial leadership jointly review significant commercial relationships periodically to identify and manage any institutional conflicts of interest that may affect the perception of WBN's independence.
13
Political Advertising

Political advertising — advertising paid for by or on behalf of political parties, candidates, political action organisations, or advocacy groups seeking to influence political outcomes — is subject to the most stringent standards WBN applies to any advertising category. The intersection of commercial arrangements and political content creates the greatest potential for harm to WBN's independence and credibility, and we treat it accordingly.

Our Approach to Political Advertising

WBN evaluates political advertising on a case-by-case basis, subject to the following principles:

  • Accuracy is mandatory. We do not publish political advertising that contains false or misleading factual claims. Political advertising is subject to the same accuracy standard as all other advertising — and given the potential for political advertising to influence public discourse, we apply additional scrutiny to factual claims before publication.
  • Clear identification. All political advertising is clearly and prominently identified as paid political advertising, including the name of the funding entity. Opacity about the source of political advertising is not permitted.
  • No editorial influence. The placement of political advertising on WBN platforms does not entitle the advertiser to any influence over WBN's political coverage, editorial framing, or news decisions.
  • Equal treatment across the political spectrum. Where WBN accepts political advertising from one political party, candidate, or ideological position, it applies the same acceptance standards to advertising from other political parties, candidates, and positions. We do not apply different thresholds for different political affiliations.
  • Right to decline. WBN reserves the right to decline any political advertising that conflicts with our values, our content standards, or our assessment of its potential effect on the public interest — regardless of political affiliation.
14
AI-Generated & AI-Assisted Commercial Content

AI is increasingly used to assist in the production of advertising and sponsored content. WBN's approach to AI-generated commercial content is governed by the same principles of transparency and human accountability that govern AI use across all of WBN's operations.

AI in Advertising Production

Advertisers and sponsors may use AI to assist in the production of content submitted for publication on WBN's platforms. This includes AI-generated copy, AI-assisted creative, and AI-produced video or audio. WBN does not prohibit the use of AI in the production of advertising or sponsored content — but the use of AI does not reduce the obligations of the advertiser or sponsor with respect to the accuracy, legality, and compliance of the content they submit.

Disclosure of AI in Sponsored Content

Where WBN itself uses AI to assist in the production of sponsored content on behalf of a commercial client — including in PromptCast™ or related content services — this is disclosed in the published content in addition to the standard sponsorship disclosure. Readers are told both that the content is sponsored and that AI assistance was used in its production. Human editorial review of all AI-assisted sponsored content is mandatory before publication.

AI Does Not Alter Disclosure Standards

The use of AI in the production of commercial content does not create an exception to WBN's disclosure requirements, accuracy standards, or content review obligations. AI-generated or AI-assisted commercial content is subject to exactly the same standards as human-produced commercial content — and is reviewed with the same rigour, including for accuracy, misleading claims, and compliance with the standards in this Policy.

15
Advertiser Responsibilities

Advertisers and sponsors who publish content on WBN platforms accept the following responsibilities as a condition of their commercial relationship with WBN. These are not one-sided obligations — WBN holds itself to the same standards — but they are non-negotiable requirements for participation in WBN's commercial environment.

  • Accuracy of submitted content. Advertisers are responsible for ensuring that all advertising and sponsored content they submit to WBN is factually accurate, legally compliant, and consistent with the standards described in this Policy.
  • Disclosure of material facts. Advertisers must disclose to WBN any facts about their organisation, their products, or their content that are material to WBN's assessment of the advertising under this Policy — including ongoing legal proceedings, regulatory investigations, or material changes to the claims made in their advertising.
  • No attempt to influence editorial content. Advertisers accept, as a condition of their commercial relationship with WBN, that they have no right to influence, restrict, or direct WBN's editorial coverage — of themselves or of any other subject. Any attempt to exercise such influence is a breach of the commercial relationship and will be treated as such.
  • Compliance with WBN's standards on update. Where WBN updates its advertising acceptance standards in ways that affect existing commercial arrangements, advertisers are notified and given reasonable time to bring existing content into compliance or to conclude their commercial arrangement.
  • Responsibility for third-party content. Where an advertiser's submission incorporates content produced by third parties — including AI systems — the advertiser remains responsible for that content's accuracy and compliance with WBN's standards.
16
Reader Transparency & Trust

Everything in this Policy is ultimately in service of one goal: maintaining the trust of WBN's readers. Our audiences have a right to understand the commercial environment in which they encounter our content. They have a right to know when content is commercially enabled. And they have a right to be confident that the independent journalism they read from WBN is genuinely independent — not shaped by the commercial interests of those who advertise on our platforms.

What Readers Can Rely On
  • WBN's editorial journalism is produced without influence from advertisers, sponsors, or commercial partners.
  • All commercial content on WBN platforms is clearly labelled so that it is distinguishable from independent editorial content.
  • Commercial relationships that are relevant to the editorial coverage readers are reading are disclosed within that coverage.
  • WBN does not sell editorial coverage, editorial mentions, or editorial protection to commercial partners.
  • The presence of advertising on a WBN platform does not imply WBN's endorsement of the advertiser or their products.
Raising Concerns

Readers who believe that WBN has published commercial content that was not adequately disclosed, or that a commercial relationship has influenced WBN's editorial coverage in a way inconsistent with this Policy, are encouraged to raise that concern directly with us at editorial@wbnn.news. All such concerns are reviewed seriously and responded to honestly.

Our long-term position: WBN values its credibility with readers more than any individual commercial relationship. If a commercial arrangement ever requires us to choose between editorial integrity and commercial revenue, we choose editorial integrity. That is not a decision we take lightly or announce theatrically — it is simply the standard we hold ourselves to, every day.

Policy Review & Contact
How This Policy Is Maintained

This Advertising & Sponsored Content Policy is reviewed at least annually and updated when WBN's commercial practices, platform capabilities, regulatory environment, or industry standards warrant a revision. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this document reflects the most recent change. Material updates are communicated to advertising partners and, where relevant, to readers through WBN's platforms. Previous versions of this Policy are available on request.

This Policy is owned jointly by WBN's editorial and commercial leadership. Where the two functions have different perspectives on a policy question, the editorial position is determinative on matters that affect editorial independence or reader trust.
